Clear your head

Negative emotions can occasionally surface within the workplace, interrupting productivity and concentration. While some people are able to simply clear their head of these negative emotions by focusing on their tasks at hand, for others it can be more difficult to put them out of mind.

Below are four tips to assist you with clearing your head of negative thoughts.

Change your body language

Body language is well known to affect a person’s mood. You may find it worthwhile to consciously change your posture in order to lift your mood and clear any negative emotions you may be experiencing. Smile, even if you don’t really feel like it, and watch your mood rise.

Talk about it

It may be useful to discuss your emotions connected to these negative thoughts with a close friend or mentor to help air them and clear them from your head. However be aware – it may not be appropriate to do this with a close work colleague as this could create tension or problems in the future.

Focus on the positives

You may find that by forcing yourself to focus on a few specific positives, you’ll be able to distract yourself from any negative emotions you might be experiencing. This could be as simple as writing a list of five positives in your life, or thinking about an upcoming activity you have planned with a close friend or your partner.

Take a walk

Some people find that all they need to do to clear their head of negative emotions is to take a short, brisk walk around the block. By getting the circulation flowing and inhaling fresh air, you may find it much easier to return to your desk with a positive frame of mind.
